TAPAS, TAPS & TIDBITS

Food & Drink in Greater Hamilton

In past issues I’ve written about Steel Town Cider on Frid Street in Hamilton. They make great ciders, cider slushies, beers, wine, and more. They've got games like cornhole on the patio and speed dating nights, It’s well worth checking out. There is another local cidery that I haven't gotten the chance to visit yet, though it’s been around for about 10 years. I've seen the product and tried it at other local establishments like Clifford Brewing, but haven't gone there myself. So this month,  I finally got to check out West Ave Cider for myself.

West Ave Cider is located a short drive away in Freelton, just north of Waterdown. The cidery is at 84 Concession Rd. East (Just east of highway 6).  It’s a beautiful property with a very nice cider room.  They opened in 2017 and have been awarded Best cider in Ontario multiple times.  West Ave makes cider in small batches, using quality ingredients including rare heritage apples, which are now rare in Canada.

As for the ciders, they have three core brands: Heritage Dry, Cherriosity, and Little Mac.  They also have 3 seasonal ciders on tap, plus their premium bottle selection and dessert ciders, including their “Ice Cider”.  I’ll have to go back to try some of the others.  For this trip, having only tried the Heritage before, I chose to have a glass of the Little Mac.  This one intrigued me the most because it’s rare to have ciders made from a single apple, and is the only one in the area to do so. This cider is akin to a single malt whiskey, with only 100% McIntosh apples being used.  This makes the cider delicious, not the apples, just the cider (Pun intended).  It is a pleasant, dry, easy drinking cider that comes in at a reasonable 6% alcohol and was thoroughly enjoyable. I enjoyed it so much that I walked out with six more to go!

The ciders are available in over 100 area restaurants and bars as well as the LCBO.  So, pick some up today or take the short drive to Concession 8.  They are open Wed-Sun, Noon-6pm for lunch, snacks, and cider.  It's a location you definitely want to check out.  You won’t be disappointed.

I've also used this month's Tapas and Taps for an excuse to head to one of The Hammer Monthly’s newest supporters, Power Pizza at 134 Ottawa St. North, to try something that no one else in the market serves:  Pizza Skulls. That's right, skulls.  Pizza made in the shape of skulls.  Power Pizza opened in 2021 and they just celebrated their 4th anniversary on May 12th.

Seeded SourdoughSeeded Sourdough     About 2 years ago they introduced their uniquely morbid (and delicious!) pizza skulls.  Simply put, the pizza skull is a skull-shaped mini, panzerotti-style, fist sized pizza bite.   They are filled with cheese, marinara sauce, and pepperoni, but can be customized with any person's pizza preferences.  They are absolutely delicious, and now I totally have to bring these to events and parties, if only to hear someone say  “Who brought the skulls?”
