GIFT GUIDE

The air is getting crisp. The leaves are turning scarlet. In some distant, secret place, Mariah Carey is beginning to thaw.  The holidays are upon us, people!
Regardless of what you celebrate, how you celebrate, or how much you actually enjoy the so-called-cellebrations, it is undeniable that the end of the year tends to mean a long list of gifts to give. So, In this article, I am going to highlight some of my favourite hidden gems and underrated spots in Hamilton & Burlington!

Let’s start with a walk down King Street. I must preface by saying that there are a million amazing spots on King, and these are just a few of many worthwhile destinations. The first spot is Sarah and Tom, a one stop shop for all things anime and KPOP. While neither are my cup of tea, the amount of cutesy accessories and trinkets practically begging to be shoved in a stocking make it a perfect gifting spot.  Next is Into The Abyss, a palpably cool record store that is sure to have some amazing options for any and all music lovers in your life.

Studio 205 is one of my new favourite shops, it's a place where multiple artists hock their wares, so you can find something for anyone’s style.  Obskurah Bazaar is another collection of artists, this one focusing on wiccan and pagan goods.

Then there’s Rockin’ Tees, a positively kick-ass store full of hard to find doc martens and vans, T-shirts for every band you can imagine, and more novelty belt buckles than I’ve ever seen in one place.  One last King business I want to shout out is: The Hammer Rage Room.  They offer gift cards:  the perfect gift for all of the emotionally constipated, overworked, or just plain cranky individuals in your life.

The next three are for a slightly more niche demographic … that being my fellow nerds.  Everyone has some nerds in their life, and when gifting for geeks you absolutely must check out Black Knight Games, Torchlight Games, and Dragon’s Lair. All three are businesses that I visit frequently and absolutely swear by. Black Knight Games focuses on DND, tabletop war games, Magic the Gathering, and other ttrpgs and card games. It’s a great place to buy minis or rule books and, in my opinion, the best dice in the city. Torchlight games focuses more on model kits, also tabletop war games, and anime figures. It genuinely made up half of my Christmas shopping last year, with everything from Pokemon models for kids to airbrushes for mass painting Warhammer figurines. I also want to assure people that I can personally vouch that the staff of both Black Knight and Torchlight are incredibly kind and super helpful. If you don’t super understand what it is your recipient wants or what the hell a “Gundam” is, they will help you find something perfect.  Dragon’s Lair is quite different, focusing primarily on decor.  Specifically, sick as hell fantasy weapons to mount on your wall. I don’t need to explain to you that swords are awesome.

The Keeping Room in Dundas is a store that I can’t enter without spending at least $30 dollars. Full of gorgeous crockery, mugs and cups of all sorts, and novelty kitchen stuff perfect for gifting,  it is an absolute must-stop for the gifting season.  Next is Westside Stories, a quaint used book store with some of the best selection I’ve ever seen, especially if you’re looking for vintage or classic books.  The final stop on my gifting guide is a two-for-one, King William’s Books and Mixed Media.  I say two for one because the stores are literally split down the middle.  They have an eclectic selection of wonderful books, especially storybooks.  This is, without a doubt, the best art supplies store in the city.
